Representing the Other: Cultures and Clashes

1. Demonstrate a broad understanding of the themes of the module and their chosen degree subject.
2. Demonstrate ability to apply modes of analysis to a range of written and visual texts
3. Effectively express themselves and their ideas in a seminar environment
4. Demonstrate an informed critical understanding of selected examples of writing/performance/film
5. Relate these texts to contemporary cultural concerns and contexts.

The module will provide students with an entry-level understanding of key concepts and theories which underpin humanities subjects, encompassing theatre, drama, film, TV, English literature, creative writing subjects.

The module will define and evaluate different approaches which are relevant to their individual schemes of study, drawing from the following set of core concepts in literature, drama, television and film:
• Identity (Class, Gender, Race)
• Colonialism, Post-colonialism
• Representations of the ‘Other’

Students will have the opportunity to examine both historical and contemporary examples of how their subject expresses particular representations of the ‘Other’.

To effectively prepare students for the format and independent nature of study expected within humanities subjects, the module will take the format of a weekly one-hour lecture followed by intensive two-hour seminars. Students are expected to have read/watched appropriate texts in advance of the seminars.
The seminars may include a mix of formats including a traditional seminar and/or viewings of films and performances.

Students will be given advance reading ahead of the seminars to aid discussion and reflection.
