On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
1. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of biomechanics and phsiology and of the relationship between them as disciplines that underpin human structure and function.
2. Demonstrate the practical skills and techniques required to monitor and evaluate participants in health and performance contexts.
3. Appropriately evaluate sources of information.
4. Solve problems of a numerical and logical nature.
5. Use a range of computer packages to analyze biomechanical and physiological data and produce reports.
This module introduces students to the study of kinesiology which is the scientific study of human movement and encompasses elements of both biomechanics and physiology. Students will develop a secure understanding of mechanical principles relevant to the study of sport and exercise and understand how the structure of the body contributes our movement characteristics. A wide variety of sport and exercise situations will be used to demonstrate the application of these principles. A series of laboratory sessions will introduce some of the key analytical tools such as force plates and motion analysis available to a kinesiologist, and will help students consolidate their understanding of the theory.
