Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

* Outline the functions of an archive, special collections department or local studies service

  • Discuss the delivery of the core functions of an archive, special collections department, or local studies service within a specific cultural context

* Evaluate how such services conform to best practice

*Identify, and critically engage with, a range of secondary materials (articles, books, web-based resources) from up to date professional literature

* Critically examine the theoretical underpinnings of the discipline

* Discuss how current professional theory relates to professional practice as appropriate

Brief description

This module will enable students to understand the nature of archive, special collections and local studies material, make arrangements for the preservation and long-term care of collections, process and catalogue material effectively, and to provide for innovative access and develop outreach strategies for such collections.
