Learning Outcomes

On completion of the module, students should be able to:

  • relate the structure of plant and animal tissues to their function
  • demonstrate a basic understanding of homeostatic mechanisms,
  • list the main physiological systems in animals and give a basic explanation of their function.

Aims

The module aims to give the students a basic knowledge and understanding of the physiology that allows organisms to function and to maintain homeostasis.

Content

The module will deal, in a series of classes, with basic plant and animal physiology and relate structure to function. It will also deal at a basic level with homeostasis and the various controls mechanisms in living organisms.
The curriculum will include the following.
The physiology of photosynthesis in terrestrial plants and some aspects of its control.
Transport of materials in plants.
Basic aspects of animal physiology including
Homeostasis and feedback control.
Nervous system.
Sensory, integrative and effector systems.
Endocrine systems.
Circulatory systems
Ventilation and gas exchange
Digestive systems.
Osmoregulation and excretion.
Reproduction.
