Brief description

Through participation in Honours Special Studies the student will be able to study a topic of their own selection, in depth, and will be provided with an opportunity to develop a variety of analytical and transferable skills. The topics have been chosen to provide scope for advanced study and student-centred learning relevant to all of our degree schemes, and to provide a teaching link with the research expertise of the lecturers involved. Lectures, seminars, and workshops will be provided as appropriate. However, the emphasis will be on student centred learning and students will be expected to research their own material using library and database sources, examine and critically assess primary research literature, and produce group and individual reports as well as making oral presentations. Each student is required to study one topic in either semester, unless their degree scheme dictates otherwise. A student's assessed work subject in Honours Special Studies must be different to that researched in their Final Year Project BS32930.
Semester 1 topics:
(BS31110) Climate Change Biology
Genetics, Health and Society
Information and Data Handling in Biochemistry
The Mammals
(BG31110) Bioleg a Chymdeithas

  • All students taking either BS31110, BG31110 or BS31210 need to attend the first Honours Special Studies session in semester 1, in which you will be asked to hand in a form giving your list of topic choices. This first session will be an overview of the Honours Special Study modules, including discussion of literature searching and how to present talks and essays. You should then look at your e-mail and/or the Honours notice board (on the first floor in the Edward Llwyd Building) later in the week to confirm your topic enrolment and its location. There is also an Honours Special Studies web site, which can be accessed at http://users.aber.ac.uk/ias/hss/home or via the IBS Undergraduate Course Documents web page. More information and details of the choice of topics can be found in the Third Year Handbook.
