On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
Brief description
The ‘Thatcher Revolution’ of British political, social and economic life is an increasing presence in the historiography if modern Britain. The module will examine the origins, development, implementation, and legacy of Thatcherism. For instance: what were the cultural causes of Thatcherism in the 1960s? How did the New Right economic policies of Hayek and Friedman influence Conservative Party policy in the 1970s and 1980s? What was the social and economic impact of Thatcherism on Britain? How was Thatcher presented to the media? How was Thatcherism received by the public and media? How far was Thatcher responsible for the creation of New Labour? Has British politics, and have British policy makers, ever really moved on from Thatcherism? This module will involve the use of primary sources, such as policy documents and the press, and analysis of the trends in how historians have assessed Thatcher and her legacy from contemporary authors to the present day.
