Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

Discuss how educationists and therapists have incorporated play into their professional practices

Show an understanding of the educational and therapeutic rationales for the use of play in their practices

Demonstrate an awareness of the practical problems in designing opportunities for play for children with special educational needs

Discuss the debates around the concept of children's 'play culture'

Show an understanding of the organization of children's play practices

Brief description

This course builds on the work covered in the semester one course, Working with Play. Where that course is mainly concerned with academic theorizing and research on children and play, this course focuses on play in practical settings. The course is divided into three parts. In the first and second parts, we will consider how educationists and those who work with children with problems of various kinds have incorporated play into their professional practice. In the third part of the course we will consider children's own play practices and children's culture in practice.

Content

Lectures are based on the following topics:
1 Introduction to play in practice
2 Play and Educational Practice 1: Bringing play into learning
3 Play and Educational practice 2: Bringing learning into play
4 Play and Educational practice 3: The play-work tradition, forest schools and outdoor play
5 Special Education and Children
6 Play and Therapeutic Practice
7 Play and Therapeutic Practice - disabled children's right to play
8 Play and Children's practice - Children's Culture
9 Play and Children's practice - The organization of children's play: case studies
10 Conclusion: Children's culture and reflective practice.

Seminars will be based on the following topics

1 Understanding play and learning
2 The tradition of outdoor play provision
3 Play in therapeutic settings
4 Children'r culture
5 Reflecting on play in practice

Subject Specific Skills Students will gain a grounding in the conceptual vocabulary and practical organization of play in both professional practice and children's own cultural activities.
Team work Through contribution to group exercises and discussions in seminars.
