Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

Demonstrate fundamental skills in the processes of drawing

Work in a number of different media from memory and from observation

Make an informed and personal response within the confines of a prescriptive brief, and to articulate their response, both towards their own work and that of others.

Work towards prescribed briefs and deadlines

Aims

This module, in conjunction with Art Practice B in Semester 2, aims to give students the technical understanding and self-knowledge necessary for entry into their second year.

Brief description

This is a level 1 introductory module to the theories and techniques of drawing, illustration, life studies and printmaking.

Content

Students will study each of the FOUR areas of drawing, illustration, life studies, and printmaking in a series of five, weekly, three-hour taught sessions, followed by an hour of tutor-led study time, or, in the case of drawing, preceded by a one-hour introductory lecture.

Weeks 1-5: I hour lecture followed by a 3-hour practical drawing class covering: Line, Tone, Chiaroscuro, Documentation, Surface.

Weeks 1-5: 3-hour practical illustration class covering: Picture Research, Layout and Compositional Studies, Preparatory Drawings for Final Work, Finishing and Reproduction. Followed by an hour of tutor-led study time.

Week 6: small group tutorials

Weeks 7-11: 3-hour practical printmaking workshop covering: Introduction to Intaglio (1 and 2), Looking at Prints from the University Collection (seminar), Introduction to Relief Printing (1 and 2) followed by an hour of tutor-led study time.

Weeks 7-11: 3-hour practical life drawing class covering: Line, Tone, Anatomy, Drawing in Colour, Movement and Arrested Movement.
