Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module students should be able to:

Identify key issues regarding the cause of migration and displacement of young people.

Evaluate educational intervention strategies developed to support displaced young people.

Evaluate the impact of issues such as conflict, famine, drought on children's lives

Brief description

This module outlines the causes of displacement and migration for children in a range of countries and contexts. The module evaluates some of the support procedures developed by UNICEF, and others, to critically analyse the effect of interventions on children’s education within these contexts.

Aims

To provide an understanding of the causes of migration for young people.
To evaluate the educational challenges faced by children and international agencies as a result of displacement and migration.
To evaluate case studies and current media stories regarding interventions in action.

Content

Sessions may be a combination of lectures, seminars or workshops and will include the following topics:
• Session 1- Causes of Migration and Enforced Mobility
• Session 2- Key Issues with Youth Displacement
• Session 3-4- UNICEF Education Strategy for Displaced Children
• Session 5- Educational Strategies in the Developing World
• Session 6 - Children's Perspectives on International Transitions
• Session 7- Education in Emergencies
• Session 8- Post-conflict Education
• Session 9- Inter-Agency Educational Interventions
• Session 10 - Case Study

Module Skills

Skills Type Skills details
Application of Number Students may analyze numerical data in researching their assignments.
Communication Students will have the opportunity to develop their written and oral communication skills. Oral presentation skills will be developed through in class discussions and written skills will be developed through the assignments
Improving own Learning and Performance Students will be required to undertake self-directed study in terms of the wider reading and assignment preparation. Attendance in sessions will enhance a range of learning skills.
Information Technology tudents will develop competency in utilizing electronic sources of information through bibliographic and web based sources. All assignments will be submitted in a word processed format.
Personal Development and Career planning Students will develop a range of transferable skills including time management, team work, communication and evaluative skills
Problem solving Students will analyse a range of sources and texts as part of their independent research towards the assignments. Problem solving activities will form part of the lectures.
Research skills Students will have the opportunity to undertake independent research for their assignments.
Subject Specific Skills Students will develop key analytical skills and have the opportunity to demonstrate these through a case study of interventions/practices within the context of the module.
Team work Students will have the opportunity to work in groups as part of the activities during and in between lectures.
