Brief description


This module is designed to give Foundation Year students a broad introduction to key themes in their chosen subject (Subject A) and one other (Subject B), to enable them to experience and reflect on cross-discipline learning experiences.


Students will also be provided with instruction on how to use learning resources and information on services provided to enhance their personal development.


The module will develop and enhance key skillsets as indicated in the Learning Outcomes and Assessment.

Content


In Week 0 students will attend workshops introducing them to learning resources.


Students will attend bespoke Foundation Year workshops to help them identify appropriate Level 1 content in Subject A and Subject B, and help students reflect on their learning experiences throughout the course. These will take place in registration week (0), and teaching weeks 5, 6, culminating in individual poster presentations in January during the exam period.


Subject A: Their named course (e.g. Geography with Foundation, Psychology with Foundation etc.) - Students will attend Level 1 content in teaching weeks 1, 2, 3, 4 (lectures and associated seminars/workshops)


Subject B: An appropriate subject from one other department that provides foundation year schemes - students will attend Level 1 content in teaching weeks 7, 8, 9 and 10 (lectures and associated seminars/workshops)


Students will be provided with a list of academic activities to carry out each week as part of the process for developing a learning journal.


In Weeks 1-4 and 7-10 students will also attend a 1 hour personal development seminar

Information Technology Students will use a range of software packages, and develop presentation skills involving information and data.
Personal Development and Career planning ​Students will develop awareness of their personal skills, beliefs and qualities in relation to course progression through a Learning Journal.
Problem solving Students will identify factors and issues relating to their chosen subjects.
Research skills Students will undertake an analysis of academic and non-academic sources and produce academically appropriate reports.
Subject Specific Skills Students will develop awareness of issues relating to a topic in the student’s chosen subject area and how issues relating to the topic in other academic areas may be relevant to their problem solving approach.
Team work Students will develop an understanding of group dynamics, contribute to the setting of group goals, contribute effectively to the planning of group activities, and play an active part in group activities.
