Overview

 

Gardeners and painters share a common creative language, shaping colour, composition, texture and form to create harmony and beauty. This inspiring course celebrates that connection through painting directly from observation in a range of beautiful gardens.

Working on location during a series of special garden visits, you will develop the skills to capture the unique forms, textures, colours and atmosphere of each setting. Watercolour will be the primary medium, exploring its expressive qualities for conveying light, mood and the changing character of gardens. We will also experiment with mixed media techniques to create rich, dynamic and individual responses.

Session 1: Composing a Garden

Session 2: Ways of Seeing

Session 3: Capturing Colour

Session 4: From Sketches to Studies

Session 5: In the Kitchen Garden

Sessions 6: Printmaking & Presentations

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module, students should be able to:  

  1. Develop skills and techniques for working from life, on location in a variety of gardens whilst on group trips.
  2. Develop observational drawing and painting skills including fundamental skills of mark-making, texture and colour mixing using a limited palette.
  3. Explore a variety of styles and approaches encouraging experimentation using a variety of materials & methods including mixed media to interpret gardens.
  4. Research the use of nature as inspiration, studying different garden designers and artists through tutor talks and group discussions.
  5. Develop process taking location sketchbook studies as inspiration, developing into further painted studies to then inspire more resolved works of art capturing key elements and characteristics of one or more gardens visited.

Assessments

  1. Study Book. Sketchbook of drawn and painted studies created from life, in a variety of garden types. (50%)
  2. 1000 Word Presentation. (20%)
  3. Portfolio. Collection of resolved artworks developed from on location studies and experimental works. (30%)
