Profile
I am a Japanese national and native speaker with extensive experience in education, the media industry, and professional organizations in both the UK and Japan. Before joining Aberystwyth University, I taught in UK higher education for about 10 years, delivering Japanese language and culture to undergraduate and postgraduate students, and in Japan I also taught English in universities, business organizations, and schools. In addition to teaching, I have worked as an administrator and translator on projects related to healthcare and cross-cultural practices, and have media experience as a writer and FM radio DJ.
My current doctoral research investigates the discursive construction of gender identities in popular music in Japan and the UK. Drawing on discourse analysis and corpus linguistics, I analyze commercially successful song lyrics to explore how gender is indexed and represented across these cultural contexts.
In my free time, I enjoy practicing the acoustic and bass guitar, photography, and oil painting, as well as singing loud while cooking.
