Overview 

This course introduces learners to the biology, ecology, conservation, global diversity and anthropogenically mediated distribution of freshwater crayfish. It focusses on the UK’s only native and its several invasive crayfish species together with the threats they face including disease. The course then expands to explore worldwide crayfish families, their ecological roles and their economic and cultural significance.

Programme

The course will cover the following topics:

Unit 1. Introduction to freshwater crayfish and their evolutionary relationship to other crustaceans. The basic anatomy and physiology of freshwater crayfish.

Unit 2. Crayfish species in the UK. Ecology and life cycle of white-clawed crayfish. Native European species.

Unit 3. A freshwater crayfish 'world tour' examining their range of form, habitat and life cycles.

Unit 4. The worldwide spread of freshwater crayfish for human consumption and the resulting cultural, economic and environmental consequences.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module students should be able to:

  1. Describe basic crayfish anatomy, biology and taxonomy.
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of the ecology and life history of the native, white-clawed crayfish.
  3. Identify the major native European freshwater crayfish species and define their distribution.
  4. Explain the impacts of invasive freshwater crayfish species including as vectors of crayfish plague.
  5. Use a range of examples, to illustrate the major groups of freshwater crayfish worldwide and their economic and environmental significance.

Assessments 

  1. Discussion Boards. Interaction via discussion boards and groups for each unit. (40%)
  2. 1500 word essay (60%)
