Classical Music Through the Ages: From Medieval Chant to Contemporary Masterpieces

Overview

This course offers an engaging and accessible introduction to the history of Western classical music, tracing its development from the medieval period to the work of composers writing today. Through guided listening, discussion and historical exploration, participants will discover how music has evolved over more than a thousand years in response to changing artistic, cultural and social influences. The course introduces many of the major composers, styles and landmark works that have shaped the Western classical tradition. Alongside exploring the music itself, participants will consider the historical contexts in which these works were created, examining how politics, religion, philosophy, technological innovation and changing artistic ideals influenced composers and their music.

Designed to be informative, enjoyable and approachable, this course is suitable for complete beginners as well as those wishing to refresh or broaden their knowledge of music history. Whether you are new to classical music or looking to deepen your appreciation of familiar masterpieces, the module provides an excellent foundation for further musical exploration.

Learning Outcomes 

1. Demonstrate an understanding of the history of Western classical music.
2. Demonstrate an understanding of a wide range of technical, musical terms - both historical and modern - and evidence their usage in the context of different musical environments.
3. Clearly and confidently communicate musical ideas, following an analysis of a piece of music – specifically from a historical perspective.
4. Evaluate, analyse, discuss, and justify the technical components of different pieces of music – communicating these in speech and in written formats.

Assessments 

1. Case Study. A response to a lecture of your choice. (40%)

2. Essay. An essay responding to a lecture of your choice. (60%)
