Overview

This dynamic course will cover the skills required to create a fitted corset (Basque). Would you like to create a Basque for a wedding, fancy dress, theatre or evening wear? On this course, you will study fabrics and their limitations and learn about the historical importance and changes in fashion. You will make your own mannequin with the opportunity to create an up-cycled garment. Some materials will be supplied but learners will need to have measuring tapes, cottons scissors and access to a sewing machine between classes. Sewing machines will be supplied during the class sessions.

Programme

Session one: Outline of module and a brief understanding of fabric. Students to try demonstrations of different seams. 

Session Two: PowerPoint on the History of corsetry- style to modern day Making a corsetry belt, pants and designs for a Basque Looking at patterns creating simple stitches for embellishments Creating own mannequin in pairs Home study Prepping designs, and finding fabric.

Session Three: Assess belt Working in teams helping each other with pattern drafting. Demonstrations by tutor presents a design brief.  

Session Four: Tutorial and bring in unfinished pieces Embroidery demonstration backed up with videos.

Session Five: Finishing off and embellishments Embroidery and assessment.

Learning Outcomes

  1. To design and create a plain boned or cupped basque.
  2. Make and embellish a corset belt.
  3. Apply knowledge of the qualities of the materials through creating a fabric log book.

Assessments

  1. Portfolio - 70%
  2. Artefact or Performance - 20%
  3. Report - 10%
