Overview

Mosaic has been associated with mental health and wellness linked to this art form. The technique and skills require the brain to function and block other worries. Students will be making a small plaque on a wooden substrate to create a mosaic and learn about the history of mosaics. This course will cover design, techniques and completion. A weekend is dedicated to the working and technical skills but design skills and an understanding of the decisions mosaicists use to come to their final mosaic will be taught online as a self-paced units. Students will leave with a mosaic to grout at home. The course is packed with extra study and demonstrations of cutting and grouting.

Programme

Pre course units will be available on Blackboard to discuss design choices and ideas.

Day One: Overview of the course.  Demonstration of cutting techniques and adhesive elements required for different materials and where they will be located. Students will choose from 4 basic designs prepared by the tutor.

Day Two: Working on mosaics. Further demonstrations and group critique and grouting.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Complete a mosaic and a design personal to their interests.

  2. Demonstrate an understanding of the risks of working with the materials

  • Portfolio - 70%
  • Notebook of techniques and planning - 30%
