Overview
An eight unit online course that helps those who wish to write for specialised magazines or national newspapers. Students will be guided on how to undertake and write up an interview, how to write reviews for books, films or performance events – this may be for local ‘what’s on guides’, to share on your own blog or social media pages or for national papers or magazines.
Many of us need to put together our own websites in this day and age, this course will guide the student through writing for websites and other promotional writing.
The course will include one live Teams meetings, power points which include voice notes to guide the student as well as exercises and mini research projects.

Introduction: getting to know each other. What is freelance writing? The importance and various methods of keeping a journal/ notebook/ scrapbook – particularly for the short story form. Examining the wide ranging options of this genre - Willings Press guide. - Unit 2

Freelance article writing – turning your enthusiasms and life experience into material. What are the most important elements/qualities of a good feature? An examination of the essential features of articles – also the choices of structure. - Unit 3
How to do an interview to make up all, or part of an article? - Unit 4

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge of the specific methods and techniques required to write freelance features.
- Through analysis, identify specific elements of promotional writing for the web and other media.
- Demonstrate an understanding of how to write a review.
- Understand how to approach and complete an interview.
- Demonstrate an understanding of how to pitch to an editor of a publication, and other methods of how to share their work and an overview of standard safety/safeguarding protocol.
