Overview 

Do you have an old draft of writing that sits in a drawer waiting for new life? Do you have a great writing project that you started but never finished? Would you like to breathe fresh life into a writing project? Regenerative Writing is about the renewal of writing methods and practice, exploring how we write and how we can find ways to create passion and excitement for an old project. Working to create stronger characters, nurture new narratives and rediscover themes. This course will explore techniques to rethink your ideas and your writing drafts, and regenerate your writing project. The course will teach writers of scripts and prose, tools and techniques to reinvigorate your writing focusing on getting new life into an old idea.

Programme

The module is delivered through Blackboard, with eight units delivered via Panopto presentations and will also include 2 x 45 minute group sessions. 

The units will cover the following topics:

  1. Introduction to Regenerative Writing (Reflecting on our writing and writing practice. Regeneration within our writing and writing practice.)
  2. Composting Old Ideas and finding new growth.(Digging deep into old ideas and discovering why they stopped growing or were abandoned. Discovering new shoots of ideas and inspiration.)
  3. Rebirth – finding the new idea. (Building the new idea and finding pathways to make it sustainable to write so we can get to the end.)
  4. Challenging our characters towards growth.
  5. Regenerating Structure and finding new narratives.
  6. In an End is a Beginning.
  7. Reinvigorating Themes.
  8. Regenerating our Writing Practice for sustainability to get to the end of the project.

Learning Outcomes 

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the roles of character and character development.
  2. Demonstrate an ability to produce a developed piece of fictional writing.
  3. Demonstrate an understanding of critical reflection of own writing.
  4. Demonstrate an understanding of narrative structure in fictional writing.

Assessments 

  • Critical Reflection Essay - 500 words (20%)
  • Portfolio of Writing - 1500 words (80%)

Reading Suggestions 

Reading suggestions will be offered throughout the course. 

Entry Requirements 

This course is for everyone. No previous experience is needed and there are no formal entry requirements. 

What Do I Need? 

As this is an online course, you would need the following: 

  • Internet access.
  • Access to a laptop or computer with a web camera and microphone; the use of headphones might also be of benefit.
  • Use of the Chrome web-browser where possible.
