SharePoint Security Improvements

In order to improve security on University SharePoint sites, we are making the following changes.

  • Restrict sharing to only site owners:
    Other site users will no longer be able to share the site or content within it with others via sharing links. If other users need to access the site or content within it, they will need to be added by the site owner.
  • Review all site owners:
    We will be checking all sites to ensure that they have owners, and that the owners are still appropriate for the department/team that the site belongs to. On sites where all members are owners, we will be in touch to discuss reducing the number of site owners.
  • Produce guidance for site owners:
    We are working on guidance materials for site owners so that you can make sure you are sharing sites and content securely.
  • Review unused sites
    We will be checking when sites were last used and removing sites that are no longer required. We will be in touch with site owners to confirm that sites are no longer required before deleting them.

As our SharePoint estate is very large, these changes will be rolled out over a period of time so you may not see the changes immediately in sites you are responsible for.
