Overview

On this course, learners will be guided through the absolute basics of music theory. From reading pitches and rhythms to understanding chords, time signatures, and clefs, to learning about transpositions, time signatures, and their modern usage, to understand the potential of these different ideas, how to read scores, and how listen actively and attentively to music. Learners will come away with a toolkit of tested concepts and techniques that will enhance their appreciation and understanding of music, setting a strong foundation for their future learning.

This course will cover the following topics:

  1. Expectations, Plans, Software Packages, and the Basics.
  2. The Foundations of Pitch Reading.
  3. The Foundations of Rhythms and Time Signatures.
  4. An Introduction to Intervals and Chords.
  5. Chord Notation and Harmonisation.
  6. Complex Rhythms.
  7. Instruments, Staves, and Transposition.
  8. An Introduction to Focused Listening.
  9. An Introduction to Score Reading.
  10. Where do These Ideas Lead?

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module, students should be able to:  

  1. Demonstrate the ability to identify and understand key foundational concepts including – but not limited to - pitch, rhythm, time signatures, intervals, chords, chord labelling, harmonisation, an understanding of basic musical instruments, clefs, and transposition.
  2. Demonstrate an ability to understand and engage with foundational musical concepts in practical, meaningful settings (especially as they relate to score reading and listening).
  3. Clearly and confidently communicate their musical intentions through traditionally-notated sheet music – either handwritten or digitally.
  4. Evaluate, analyse, discuss, and justify the technical components of a piece of music, evidencing an understanding of the key topics and an ability to apply them.

Assessments

1. Seminar Assignments - 1500 words (60%) - 15% per exercise

  • Four small exercises issued at the end of the seminars two, four, six and eight. To be reviewed and marked by the academic tutor. 

2. Final Assessment - 1000 words (40%) 

  • A larger coursework exercise that covers a broad range of course materials taught in the course.
  • There will be one feedback session per student prior to the final submission.

This course is for everyone. No previous experience is needed and there are no formal entry requirements.

What Do I Need?

As this is an online course, you would need the following:

  • Internet access
    • Access to a laptop or computer with a web camera and microphone; the use of headphones might also be of benefit
    • Use of the Chrome web-browser where possible.
