Overview

This course will be delivered online as a series of units, with video demonstrations. The emphasis for the learner will be to work from life to explore flesh, fur and other textures. During the course, we will be looking at domesticated animals and exploring methods of illustrating them using a variety of traditional mediums. The module will examine different animals’ appearances and behaviours, as well as how pets have influenced the art world throughout history. This course is suitable for beginner and intermediate artists looking to build on their observational drawing skills and knowledge of domestic animals. We will cover techniques using pencil, watercolour and ink, including some colour theory and form drawing techniques that will help students build a strong visual diary. Video demonstrations will cover these techniques and show how to apply them to a study of domestic animals. Learners will be encouraged to work independently in practical learning time outside of lessons and working from life. As well as creating a sketchbook of observation and study, students will be required to create a final piece of their chosen subject. This should demonstrate what they have learned throughout the course and help create a goal outcome for the course. Learners will be asked to work through the tasks and then complete a self-directed project. We will cover dogs, cats, horses, pigs, sheep, goats and wildfowl. If you do not have access to farmyards, we recommend that you work from YouTube film footage.
