Cleaning

We want your accommodation to be safe, clean and livable - a place you can feel comfortable in.

All areas inside and outside your accommodation must be kept up to an excellent cleaning standard by you, your housemates and us. Good housekeeping creates a pleasant environment and keeps your accommodation safe. Poor hygiene can attract germs and pests, and increases the risk of hazards in your accommodation.

The Facilities and Residences Team will visit your accommodation at various points throughout the term to carry out Community Visits and Bedroom Inspections. Further information as to what these visits entail can be found on the Inspections webpage.

Responsibilities

Your room:

You are fully responsible for ensuring your room is clean and tidy at all times. You will have access to basic equipment such as a hoover and mop. If you have an en-suite room you will also have to ensure the bathroom is kept clean.

Communal areas:

Any communal areas such as kitchens, corridors and bathrooms etc must be cleaned by everyone in the block, house or flat; it is a joint responsibility. This includes: work surfaces, fridges, ovens and bins. A good idea is to create/use a cleaning rota to help ensure your communal areas stay clean. Please contact the accommodation team if you need any help with this. It is also a group responsibility to maintain the basic cleaning equipment; making sure the hoover bag is emptied frequently and keeping mops, buckets etc clean and tidy. Hoover bags can be collected from the Accommodation Office.

Outside areas:

Please also ensure that the areas close to your block stay clean from any rubbish, including cigarette ends. Please use the external bin stores, litter bins and the cigarette bins provided.

Our responsibility:

We will clean any communal areas outside of your flat (hallways, stairs, entrances etc). You may see the cleaning team during the week and occasionally, they may access your accommodation to use University equipment, such as the hoover.

What to buy

It is a good idea to talk to your other housemates about all contributing to buying cleaning products together.

Here are some useful items you may need to keep things clean:

  • Rubber gloves.
  • Washing up liquid.
  • Tea towels.
  • Cloths, scouring pads, brush.
  • Oven/hob cleaner.
  • Anti-bacterial multi-purpose cleaner.
  • Shower and bathroom multi-purpose cleaner.
  • Toilet cleaner with separate cloth and gloves.
  • Black rubbish bags.

Make sure you always read and follow instructions carefully.
