Heating:

The University’s heating systems generally activate when the outside air temperature reaches a predetermined level, and are controlled to provide optimised temperatures.

The University endeavours to maintain target temperatures across residential buildings between 19-20°C during the day (7am – 11pm), and between 17-18°C out of hours (11pm – 7am).  Minimum temperatures should not drop below 18°C (7am –11pm) and 17°C (11pm – 7am).

Heating controls:

Whilst the heating is on, you can regulate the temperature in your bedroom and kitchen by adjusting the TRV (Thermostatic Radiator Valve) situated at the side of your radiator (see picture below).

Hot Water:

Provided 24/7

Heating times:

  • Monday - Friday: 6:30am - 9:30am & 4:30pm - 10:30pm
  • Saturday and Sunday: 6:30am - 9:30am & 2:30pm - 10:30pm

Heating controls:

Whilst the heating is on, you can regulate the temperature in your bedroom and kitchen by adjusting the TRV (Thermostatic Radiator Valve) situated at the side of your radiator (see picture).

There is also a thermostat on the wall in the hallway. If adjusting the temperature on the wall thermostat, please be mindful of other residents as this will change the temperature throughout the house.

Hot Water:

The hot water is on between 6:30am - 10:30pm. During this time the boiler will continuously circulate hot water through the cylinder to keep the water warm. The hot water cylinders in PJM are of a large capacity. Although the hot water goes off at 10:30pm, there should be enough stored hot water in the cylinder to last until at least 6:30am when the hot water is turned on again.

Heating controls:

Radiators control the heating within each room by circulating water around the radiator. This water temperature is regulated by an efficient control system which measures the external temperature; if it’s warm outside, the heating will not come on.
